Step 1
Open up a new document 800x800px and fill the background with #2b2b2b. Create a new layer named 'banner top' and make a selection of 800x70px at the top of your document using the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Apply a gradient from #404040 to #2f2e2f.

Step 2
Create a new layer named 'banner main' and make a selection of 800x190px under the 'banner top' layer and apply a gradient from #f9ae28 to #e99705.

Step 3
Now we are going to add a couple of bits to the banner so it is not so boring. So create a new layer named 'banner main line' and make a selection of 800x5px at the top of the 'banner main' layer and fill with #ffffff, lower the opacity to 20%. Create another new layer named 'banner main shine' and make a selection of 800x150px at the top of the 'banner main' layer and fill with #ffffff, lower the opacity to 7%.

Step 4
Create a new text layer and add some text for your website title. I have chosen a simple and clean font, Myriad Pro, Bold, 40pt, Crisp, #ffffff. Add some subtitle text on the side, the font that I have used there is Myriad Pro, Bold, 40pt, Crisp, #ffffff, Blend Mode: Overlay, Edit > Transform - rotate.

Step 5
Create a new text layer, this one is going to be for the global navigation so add in some links. The font that I have used here is Tahoma, Bold, 11pt, None, #f9b132. Create a new layer named 'rss icon' and add an rss icon into the layer, the one that I have used can be found here. Add some fill-in text beside the rss icon with how many subscribers you have etc, the font that I have used here is Tahoma, Bold, 11pt, None, #ffffff.

Step 6
We are now going to add the main content area which will be mainly fill-in text, firstly we are going to add some 'Welcome' text on the left under our banner. So create a new text layer and add some title text, the font that I have used for this is Myriad Pro, Bold, 24pt, Crisp, #ffffff. Create another new text layer and add some fill in text from lipsum.com, the font that I have used here is Verdana, Regular (and Bold in parts to give contrast), 11pt, None, #ffffff (and #f9b132 for the contrasted parts).

Step 7
Make another section of text like in Step 6 on the right hand side.

Step 8
Create a new layer named 'line' and make a selection of 700x1px under our two top secion texts, this is to help to break the layout up. Fill the selection wtih #f9b132.

Step 9
Now we are going to add some fill-in text news article, so create a new text layer with some title text, the font that I have used for this is Myriad Pro, Bold, 24pt, Crisp, #ffffff. And again add some fill-in text, the font that I have used here is Verdana, Regular (and Bold in parts to give contrast), 11pt, None, #ffffff (and #f9b132 for the contrasted parts). Create another new text layer and add 'Read More »' which would lead to the full article, the font that I have used here is Verdana, Bold, 11pt, None, #f9b132, underlined.

Step 10
Create a new text layer and on it add a title 'Categories »', the font that I have used here is Myriad Pro, Bold, 24pt, Crisp, #ffffff. Add some categories below this title, the font that I have used for that is Verdana, Regular, 12pt, None, #f9b132.
